There are many occupational therapy specializations, including:

  • Pediatrics Occupational therapists in this field work with children to help them develop skills for daily activities like playing, learning, and socializing. They may use applied behavior analysis to help children succeed in these activities.
  • Assistive technology Occupational therapists in this field use assistive technology to help patients enhance their occupational performance and participation in daily life. They analyze activities, evaluate patient needs, select appropriate devices, and train patients.
  • Gerontology Occupational therapists in this field help older adults maintain their independence and quality of life. They may help seniors with activities of daily living, such as bathing and dressing, or with more complex tasks, such as managing medications or using a wheelchair.
  • Certified hand therapist Certified hand therapists specialize in the treatment of hand, wrist, and upper extremity conditions like fractures, tendon injuries, and repetitive strain injuries (ie carpal tunnel syndrome).
  • Aquatic therapeutic exercise Occupational therapists in this field work with clients in the water to help them increase mobility, coordination, and muscle tone.
  • Driving and community mobility Occupational therapists in this field help their clients navigate around their community. They assess their patients to ensure that they are fit to drive and teach them how to use the relevant assistive aids.
  • Mental health Occupational therapists in this field address a patient’s emotional well-being and how making adjustments to their routines or lifestyles can improve their mental health.

When choosing an occupational therapy specialization, you can consider your interests, career goals, and skills. You can also consider which patient populations and work environments resonate with you.
